Women who have had a diagnosis of breast cancer may have decided to undergo partial or complete removal of their breasts to combat the condition and avoid chemotherapy or radiation. However, the removal of the breasts can be not only a physical change, but an emotional change as well. It can dramatically reduce their self-confidence and self-image, and can make it difficult to find clothes that help them maintain their feminine look.

At Austin Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, we see women regularly who have had mastectomies and are interested in reconstructing their breasts following these procedures. We want patients to know that your plastic surgeon, Dr. Christine Fisher , can provide solutions that work—including breast reconstruction.

What are my options for breast reconstruction?

In many instances, women will choose to have their mastectomy performed at the same time as their reconstruction procedure. This eliminates the need for multiple surgeries, and allows women to avoid a time period where they have to find a new way to come to terms with their body’s new shape and contour. In some cases, women might choose to have the mastectomy performed, and then later decide they’d like to reconstruct their breasts. It is important that patients coordinate with their doctors to ensure reconstruction occurs when desired.

There are several different types of reconstruction available, including:

  • Tissue expander implant reconstruction
  • Latissimus flap reconstruction
  • DIEP/SIEA Free TRAM reconstruction
  • Oncoplastic reconstruction after lumpectomy

Choosing the one most appropriate for your situation can be achieved with a consultation visit and initial evaluation with our team at Austin Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
