This blog is written by Sandy Lanier, PA-C who specializes in all things skincare including injectables, lasers, chemical peels, microneedling, and other non-surgical aesthetic treatments. It is part of our Staff Picks Series, where we highlight the medical-grade skincare products that our staff and providers use and love.
With the multitude of Vitamin C serums on the market, it can be difficult to sort through the options. We carry SkinCeuticals® products in our office because they are backed by decades of science and research. These medical-grade skincare products are for all skin types, and are designed to prevent signs of future damage, protect healthy skin, and correct the appearance of previous damage.
SkinCeuticals® Vitamin C Serum — Backed by Science
I’ve been using the SkinCeuticals® Vitamin C serums for years, and am very happy with the results they deliver. There are two powerful antioxidant serums in the line — CE Ferulic and Phloretin CF — that each incorporate Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid. These ingredients work in concert to neutralize free radicals induced by UVA/UVB, infrared radiation and ozone pollution, which may lead to visible signs of accelerated skin aging. In addition to antioxidant protective benefits, these serums improve signs of aging and photodamage, the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and loss of firmness, while brightening the skin’s complexion. Everyone — male or female, young or old — can benefit from an antioxidant serum.
Choosing the Right Vitamin C Serum
I often get asked by patients, “How do I know which is the right one for me?” I generally recommend CE Ferulic for normal to dry skin, and Phloretin CF for oily, sensitive, or acne-prone skin. However, I actually like to use both, just in different seasons. I use the CE Ferulic in the colder, dryer months of fall and winter because it helps to add moisture to my skin. I use Phloretin CF in the warmer months of spring and summer because it’s lightweight and easily absorbed into my skin. No matter which you’re applying, it’s a quick, one-per-day application in the morning. From there, you can layer on your normal skincare regimen and finish with makeup.
SkinCeuticals®: Results You Can See
For the longest time, I only applied the antioxidant serum to my face, neck, and chest. If I had any serum left on my hands, I usually just wiped or washed it off. Then one morning, I asked myself, “Why on Earth am I wasting this liquid gold?” I started applying the excess serum to the backs of my hands, and what a difference it has made! I have not had any other treatments to my hands, and yet they are brighter and have far less sun damage compared to my forearms. I am a walking example of how much of a difference the right Vitamin C serum can make.
