What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure performed to trim and reshape the labia minora. This procedure can be performed for cosmetic reasons or to reduce discomfort and irritation in the vaginal area.

For women uncomfortable with the size or appearance of their labia, labiaplasty may be appropriate. Some women find that their labia develop naturally to appear overly large or asymmetrical. Others may see a change happen over time, especially after childbirth.

Large labia can create discomfort during sex, making what should be a pleasurable experience into an unpleasant one. They can also chafe during other physical activities, such as running, swimming, or gymnastics. If the labia are large enough, they may be noticeable when you wear particular outfits, such as yoga pants or similarly tight clothing. They may also be exposed by certain swimsuits. Labiaplasty can eliminate these issues by reducing the size of the labia minora and adjusting their shape.

What Is the Recovery Like After Labiaplasty?

Most patients need to rest at home for about one week after undergoing labiaplasty. During this time, you’ll need to get plenty of sleep, stay hydrated, and avoid too much exertion. After the first week, you should be able to get back to work and gradually ease back into your normal routine. However, you’ll want to wait at least three or four weeks to participate in strenuous physical activity, and sexual intercourse should be avoided for at least six weeks.
