Silicone vs. Saline Breast Implants

At Austin Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, we offer two primary types of breast implants for our breast augmentation procedures: silicone implants and saline implants. While both kinds of implants feature an outer silicone shell, silicone implants are filled with a soft silicone gel, while saline implants are filled with sterile saline solution. Each breast implant option offers unique advantages and disadvantages.

Silicone Implants

The main advantage of silicone breast implants is that they’re designed to look and feel exceptionally soft and natural. However, in the rare occurrence of an implant rupturing, the silicone gel leaking into the surrounding tissue can potentially cause complications. To undergo breast augmentation with silicone implants, you must be at least 22 years old.

Saline Implants

Saline breast implants tend to look firmer and fuller than silicone implants at both the upper and lower poles of the breast.   • Quit Nicotine: Smoking and the use of any nicotine products can impact your body’s ability to heal, so it’s recommended to quit at least four weeks before surgery.
  • Avoid Certain Medications: Blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs, should be avoided as they increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Arrange for Support: After the procedure, you’ll need someone to drive you home and assist you with daily tasks for the first 24–48 hours.
  • Prepare Your Recovery Area: Set up a comfortable recovery area at home with essential items such as pillows, water, snacks, medications, and entertainment options. Having this space ready will make the initial recovery days easier.

What to Expect During Breast Augmentation Surgery in Austin

Every breast augmentation starts with a thorough consultation. We will use this time to get to know you, your body, and your aesthetic goals. Together, you and your plastic surgeon will develop a personalized treatment plan to deliver your desired results. When both of the implants have been placed and positioned, your surgeon will close the incisions with sutures and apply bandages as needed. After the surgery, you’ll need to be monitored for a couple of hours before a friend or family member can drive you home.

What Is the Recovery Like After Breast Augmentation?

We’ll provide you with a special surgical support bra, which you’ll need to wear for around two weeks. You can expect to deal with some swelling, bruising, and soreness during your recovery.

You’ll likely need to rest at home for between one and two weeks after your breast augmentation surgery. During this time, be sure to get plenty of sleep, stay hydrated, and eat nutritious foods. You should be back to your normal routine within a couple of weeks, but it’s important to avoid strenuous physical activity for approximately six to eight weeks.
