What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable cosmetic treatments used primarily to create smoother, more youthful-looking facial skin by adding natural-looking volume and eliminating signs of aging. Fillers featuring hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body, work by restoring fullness in areas that have lost volume over time. These products can improve the contours of the cheeks, chin, eyes, mouth, and lips. Other fillers with different formulations may last even longer than hyaluronic acid fillers but may also be less suitable for meeting certain aesthetic goals.

At Austin Cosmetic Medspa, we have several dermal filler options available. During your initial consultation, one of our knowledgeable aesthetic professionals will evaluate your needs and goals to help you decide which filler is the best option for you.

Our Dermal Filler Options

The quality dermal fillers available at Austin Cosmetic Medspa include the following:

Juvéderm Collection

The Juvéderm Collection is a family of hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers designed to add facial volume and smooth away wrinkles with exceptionally natural-looking, long-lasting results. There are several different dermal fillers in the Juvéderm Collection:

Juvéderm Ultra XC

This filler is used mainly to plump up the lips, restoring lost volume and giving the lips a fuller, more voluptuous appearance and smoother texture.

Juvéderm Ultra Plus

A slightly thicker version of Ultra XC, this filler is an excellent option for making more dramatic enhancements to the lips. It can also smooth out prominent creases around the nose and mouth.

Juvéderm Voluma

This hyaluronic acid filler is designed to rejuvenate larger sections of the face. For example, Voluma is great for adding lift and volume to the cheeks or enhancing the contours of the jawline.

Juvéderm Vollure

Vollure is a powerful filler used to soften moderate to severe folds and creases around the mouth, such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

Juvéderm Volbella

This filler is a silky formulation that can add subtle enhancement to the lips while diminishing fine, vertical lines that often form above the mouth.

Restylane Family

The Restylane line is another collection of hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers designed to produce subtle, natural results that usually last for many months before a touch-up treatment is required. The Restylane family includes a variety of filler products:

Restylane-L

This dermal filler is used to reduce creases around the mouth, nose, and chin. The Restylane-L formulation now contains lidocaine for a more comfortable treatment experience.

Restylane Contour

Exceptionally flexible and smooth, this filler for cheek augmentation and the correction of midface contour deficiencies integrates with the skin and soft tissue to lift and volumize in a very natural way.

Restylane Kysse

Restylane Kysse is a smooth, silky filler used to add volume to the lips while softening the vertical lines that often feather from the upper lip to the underside of the nose.

Restylane Lyft

Restylane Lyft is a versatile dermal filler that can be used to restore lost volume to the midface region, such as the cheeks, nose, and mouth. This filler can also be used to plump the backs of the hands to give them a more youthful appearance and eliminate prominent veins.

Restylane Refyne

Using proprietary cross-linking technology, this product can smooth away lines around the nose and mouth while preserving your natural facial expressions even more effectively than other dermal fillers.

Restylane Defyne

This filler boasts the same innovative technology as Refyne but adds a slightly thicker texture that allows for the treatment of even deeper lines and creases around the nose, mouth, and chin.

RHA Collection

The RHA Collection of designer fillers is available only at select aesthetic practices with high rates of patient satisfaction. It is also the only FDA-approved hyaluronic acid filler for dynamic wrinkles and folds in areas of the face that move repetitively.

The RHA Collection is intentionally designed to closely mimic your body's natural HA, allowing the fillers to be resilient enough to adapt to your facial movements. RHA fillers create a very natural look, both at rest and in motion. They’re also designed to be long-lasting, with results often remaining for up to 15 months. There are several dermal fillers in the RHA Collection, each with a unique formula and specific advantages.

Belotero Balance

Belotero Balance is a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler designed to integrate into facial skin and tissue. The unique manufacturing process for Belotero Balance yields a soft and cohesive gel that, once injected, instantly fills the skin to help smooth moderate-to-severe lines and wrinkles. While the product is versatile enough to handle moderate nasolabial folds, it’s mainly meant to treat delicate areas of the face, such as etched-in smile lines and vertical lip lines. Results from Belotero Balance usually last for at least six months.

Radiesse

Radiesse is a biostimulator and dermal filler that contains calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres instead of hyaluronic acid. This unique ingredient binds to the underlying dermal structure to offer immediate support that can be seen shortly after your procedure. At the same time, the microspheres stimulate the body to produce more collagen, an important protein for the health and structure of the skin. Results from Radiesse treatment typically last for around 12 to 15 months.

Sculptra

Sculptra, which is made with poly-L-lactic acid, is a filler and volumizer designed to reduce deep facial wrinkles, restore lost volume, and stimulate increased collagen production. The results of Sculptra treatment form gradually and look very natural, and they can often last for over two years before they start to fade.

The Dermal Filler Treatment Process

If you’d like to try dermal filler injections, you’ll first sit down for a consultation with one of our aesthetic professionals. They’ll examine your facial skin and discuss your aesthetic goals to determine the best filler option for your needs. Before the treatment, you’ll have a topical numbing cream applied to your skin.

Then, your injector professional will use a very fine needle to inject your chosen dermal fillers into the targeted skin. You may feel a slight pinch, but it shouldn’t be particularly painful. Overall, the treatment should only take around 15 to 20 minutes, and you can head home immediately after it’s finished.

Typically, no recovery time is required after dermal filler treatment. However, it’s best to wait at least 24 hours to engage in strenuous physical activity. Additionally, you may experience mild swelling, bruising, and soreness for a few days after the treatment. It’s also important that you refrain from rubbing or scratching the injection sites.
