Enhance or Restore Your Breast Aesthetics With Breast Augmentation in Austin

There are several reasons why a woman may be unhappy with the appearance of her breasts. For example, a young woman in her 20s or 30s may desire larger, more shapely breasts to give her a more voluptuous figure. Alternatively, a woman who has recently become a mother may want to restore the shape and fullness of her breasts after experiencing the bodily changes caused by pregnancy and childbirth. Whatever your reason may be for wanting to enhance your breasts, you could potentially benefit from a popular procedure called breast augmentation.

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure performed to enhance the size, shape, and proportions of the breasts. Most commonly, the procedure is performed using breast implants, which can be fully customized to fit the patient’s unique proportions and aesthetic preferences. These implants are carefully inserted into the chest, increasing the patient’s breast size while also creating a rounder, fuller, more symmetrical appearance.

Silicone vs. Saline Breast Implants

At Austin Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, we offer two primary types of breast implants for our breast augmentation procedures: silicone implants and saline implants. While both kinds of implants feature an outer silicone shell, silicone implants are filled with a soft silicone gel, while saline implants are filled with sterile saline solution. Each breast implant option offers unique advantages and disadvantages.

Silicone Implants

The main advantage of silicone breast implants is that they’re designed to look and feel exceptionally soft and natural. However, in the rare occurrence of an implant rupturing, the silicone gel leaking into the surrounding tissue can potentially cause complications. To undergo breast augmentation with silicone implants, you must be at least 22 years old.

Saline Implants

Saline breast implants tend to look firmer and fuller than silicone implants at both the upper and lower poles of the breast. As a result, they typically don’t appear or feel quite as supple or natural. However, saline implants are very unlikely to cause serious complications; even in the case of a rupture, the sterile saltwater solution will not cause any harm to your body. Saline breast implants are an option for patients over the age of 18.

What to Expect During Breast Augmentation Surgery

Every breast augmentation starts with a thorough consultation. We will use this time to get to know you, your body, and your aesthetic goals. Together, you and your plastic surgeon will develop a personalized treatment plan to deliver your desired results. This will include selecting your preferred type, size, and shape of breast implants for the procedure. The consultation also involves a physical examination, at which time we will take breast measurements and assess your current breast tissue.

On the day of your surgery, a board-certified anesthesiologist will administer general anesthesia to keep you comfortably asleep throughout the procedure. Most patients are candidates for a hidden-scar technique in which a small incision is placed in the crease beneath your breast, where the thin scar will be easily hidden by the natural fold of your breast or a bra.

Once the incision is made, your chosen implants will be carefully inserted into a dual-plane position with the tip of the implant underneath your pectoralis muscle and the lower portion of the implant under your breast gland. This placement offers a natural slope to the upper breast and limits rippling and visibility of the implant edges within the breast tissue. When both of the implants have been placed and positioned, your surgeon will close the incisions with sutures and apply bandages as needed. After the surgery, you’ll need to be monitored for a couple of hours before a friend or family member can drive you home.

What Is the Recovery Like After Breast Augmentation?

After your breast augmentation surgery, you should ideally have someone you trust stay with you for a day or two. We’ll provide you with a special surgical support bra, which you’ll need to wear for around two weeks. You can expect to deal with some swelling, bruising, and soreness during your recovery.

You’ll likely need to rest at home for between one and two weeks after your breast augmentation surgery. During this time, be sure to get plenty of sleep, stay hydrated, and eat nutritious foods. You should be back to your normal routine within a couple of weeks, but it’s important to avoid strenuous physical activity for approximately six to eight weeks.
